Blue hour is the time when it is between 4° and 6° below. Times are calculated with the standard NOAA solar formula for 50.0865° N, 14.4114° E. A hill or a tall building can hide the sun a few minutes earlier than the table shows.

What the table means in practice

Charles Bridge without people: be there before sunrise

Charles Bridge is open all night and busy almost all day. The only reliable quiet time is the blue hour before sunrise, and the first half hour after it. In June that means standing on the bridge around 04:15. In December you can arrive at 07:20 and still have the bridge almost to yourselves. As the morning goes on, the bridge fills up quickly.

Morning light falls on Prague Castle

Prague Castle sits on the west bank, so the rising sun lights it from the front. From Charles Bridge or the Old Town embankment, a morning shoot gives you the castle in warm light behind you. In the evening it is the other way round: the sun sets behind the castle, which is perfect for silhouettes and for city views from Letná or the Old Town side, but the castle itself turns dark.

Winter is the easiest season for light

In December the sun climbs to only about 17° at midday. The light stays soft all day, and the evening golden hour starts just after 15:00. A winter proposal at 15:30 can look like a summer sunset at 21:00, without the late night. The trade-off is cold hands and early darkness, so plan dinner reservations for after 17:00.

Summer evenings are long, mornings are very early

From May to July, evening golden hour runs past 21:00 and the blue hour ends around 22:00. That suits couples who do not want a 4 a.m. alarm, but popular spots will be full. If you want both quiet and good light in summer, the morning is the only option.

Clock changes

The Czech Republic moves to summer time on the last Sunday of March and back on the last Sunday of October. On those weekends, everything shifts by an hour overnight, which is easy to forget when you book a shoot weeks in advance.

A simple plan for a sunrise shoot

Meet 30–40 minutes before sunrise. Use the “first light” column as your meeting time.

Start at the busiest place first. Charles Bridge and the Old Town Square empty out the fastest in reverse, so begin there and move to quieter streets in Malá Strana as the city wakes up.

Book a car or a taxi. Trams run through the night on fewer lines, and walking with a dress at 4 a.m. is not fun.

Bring a warm layer even in summer. Early mornings by the river are cooler than you expect.

Have breakfast booked afterwards. It is the nicest way to end the morning, and you will be hungry.

A simple plan for a sunset proposal

Plan the question for the start of evening golden hour, not for sunset itself. You get warm light on faces and time for photos before it gets dark.

Choose a place with a view to the west for the classic sunset: the Old Town embankment, Charles Bridge or the Letná viewpoint.

Keep the blue hour for the city photos. The first lights of Prague with a deep blue sky are often the favourite frames of the evening.

Need help with timing?

We plan proposals, elopements and pre-wedding shoots around these times, and we can tell you which spot works best for your date. Send us your date and idea and we will reply with a suggested time and route.

More planning help: legal wedding in Prague, Prague wedding cost Ve Prague wedding venues.

Sunrise, sunset, golden hour and blue hour in Prague for every month, with practical timing for Charles Bridge, proposals and elopement shoots.

Sunrise, golden hour and blue hour in Prague for every month.
