The good news: the city looks great wet. Cobblestones reflect the street lamps, the crowds thin out, and a clear umbrella makes a lovely prop. Still, every couple should have a plan B with a roof.

This guide lists covered and indoor places that work for photos, together with what their official rules say. One pattern repeats almost everywhere: personal photos are allowed, but a professional wedding or pre-wedding shoot needs permission in advance, and tripods and flash are banned indoors. Plan B therefore has to be arranged before the wedding day, not on the morning when it rains.

Quick overview

Place

Type of cover

Professional shoot

Prague Castle passages and gates

Arches and gateways between courtyards

Outdoor area, open 06:00–22:00. The gateways between the courtyards, such as the Matthias Gate, give you a few metres of shelter with stone arches in the background. The visitor rules do not ban photography outdoors. Organised events need permission from the Castle administration, so keep the setup small: a photographer with a handheld camera and an umbrella.

Prague Castle interiors and St Vitus Cathedral

Personal photos inside need a photo licence for CZK 50. Flash, tripods, lights and selfie sticks are not allowed. Photos are not allowed at all in the Story of Prague Castle exhibition, the St Vitus Treasure, the Powder Tower and the Picture Gallery. A professional shoot inside needs an application and a contract with the Castle administration. The buildings open 09:00–17:00 from April to October and 09:00–16:00 from November to March.

Strahov Monastery and Library

Personal photos are allowed in the visitor areas. A professional shoot needs the prior written consent of the monastery. Tripods and flash are not allowed. Open daily 09:00–17:00, last entry 16:30. If it rains, the monastery courtyard and the nearby viewpoint over the city are close by for the moment the rain stops.

Klementinum

The Baroque Library Hall is seen on a guided tour of about 45 minutes, for up to 25 people. Visitors look into the hall from the doorway and do not walk in. Private photos are fine. A professional shoot needs the consent of Prague City Tourism, which runs the tours. No tripods or flash.

Old Town Bridge Tower

The tower at the Old Town end of Charles Bridge has a covered gallery with one of the best views of the bridge and the Castle. Private photos are allowed. A professional shoot needs the operator’s consent, and tripods are not allowed. Opening hours change with the season.

Vyšehrad casemates and Gorlice Hall

The brick tunnels and the large Gorlice Hall under the Vyšehrad fortress give a moody, dry backdrop. Vyšehrad names professional wedding photography explicitly: it needs approval in advance, which you request at sekretariat@praha-vysehrad.cz. Indoors there is no flash, tripod, selfie stick or lighting.

Botanical Garden, Fata Morgana greenhouse

The tropical greenhouse in Troja is warm and green all year, which makes it one of the few real winter and rain options. Private photos with a handheld camera are allowed, without tripod or lights. A professional shoot requires renting the location, with the price agreed in person. The garden is closed on Mondays. From March to October it opens 09:00–19:00, from November to February 09:00–16:00.

National Museum

The main building on Wenceslas Square, with its grand staircase and pantheon, is open daily 10:00–18:00. Personal photos are included in the ticket. Commercial use needs the museum’s consent and is charged according to its price list. No flash, no tripod.

Municipal House (Obecní dům)

Prague’s Art Nouveau landmark can be seen on guided tours of about an hour. The current tour page does not publish photo rules, so ask the venue before planning a shoot there (info@obecnidum.cz). Its café and restaurant on the ground floor are also an option for a warm break.

Arcades: Lucerna and others

Prague’s covered shopping passages, such as Lucerna, Koruna and Černá růže, are private property and publish no rules for photography. They look great on a rainy evening, but ask the management before planning a professional shoot. For Lucerna, contact lucerna@lucerna.cz.

Historic cafés

Café Imperial, Café Louvre and Café Slavia have beautiful interiors and are full of guests. If you would like a short session there, ask the café in advance. A quiet morning on a weekday is your best chance.

A historic tram

The Prague transport company DPP rents historic trams from CZK 5,900 for 60 minutes, booked at least seven days ahead. You stay dry, see the city through the windows, and have the whole tram to yourselves. The rental page does not mention photo shoots, so say what you plan when you book. Please do not plan shoots in the metro: we found no official permission for it.

How to prepare a rain plan

Arrange plan B before the day. Most indoor places need consent in advance. Ask for it when you book the shoot, not when the forecast changes.

Bring clear umbrellas. They keep you dry without hiding your faces, and they look good in photos.

Use the rain. Reflections on wet cobblestones, lit windows and empty streets often make the best frames of the day. Light rain is not a reason to cancel.

Keep the route short. Choose a plan B close to plan A, for example Castle courtyards with Strahov, or Charles Bridge with the Old Town Bridge Tower.

Protect the dress. Waterproof shoes or a second pair, a towel and clips to lift the hem make a big difference.

Check the season. Most castle gardens close from November to February, and indoor places have shorter winter hours. Our golden hour table shows the light for every month.

For the rules at outdoor places, such as Charles Bridge, the gardens and drones, see our photo shoot rules in Prague.

Let us arrange plan B

We plan pre-wedding shoots, proposals and elopements in Prague with a rain plan built in, and ask venues for permission before your date. Send us your date and ideas.

Sources

Prague Castle: visitor rules (PDF, Czech) and price list (PDF)

Strahov Monastery: visitor rules

Prague City Tourism: Clementinum

Vyšehrad: photography and filming

Botanical Garden Prague: filming and photography

National Museum: main complex

Municipal House: tours

DPP: historic tram rental

Checked against these official pages in October 2026.
